Tips for getting to know your uni city or town
A lot of uncertainty can come with moving to university. These tips will help you prepare for student life in a new city or town.
Attend your university’s open day
Use the open day as a chance to see what’s around your new city or town, experience how to get around and even do a mock walk between the campus and accommodation. Lecturers, tutors, and current students at open days can also answer any questions you have about the town or city, and they’ll be filled with recommendations.
Visit the city or town before moving
Spend some time in your new city or town before you move. Do a day trip or put an entire weekend aside. This will help you get comfortable with your new home, so you won’t be thrown into the unknown. You could time your visit with the university’s open day, as you’ll already be there.
Speak to any current or former students
Current and former students will have the clearest idea about the student experience, be aware of what’s happening and give you an honest perspective. Chat to these students on open days, reach out to tutors, or read Whatuni student reviews. Our regional guides are also filled with students sharing their living experiences.
Take note of nearby amenities
While visiting for the weekend, an open day, or both, become aware of amenities near campus and accommodation. Note where your nearest supermarkets, cafés, and homeware stores are to ease the transition when you move. You can even do this online by searching for what’s around.
Be aware of transport options
Your new city or town will have different transport options, whether travelling within your local area, within the region, or across the UK. Before moving, find which transport links are nearest to your accommodation and most convenient for getting to uni. Your university’s website may have suggestions and may even note student discounts available.

Note down events happening
Certain events and activities will already be announced well before you move. These could be student nights organised by the university or festivals happening in the city or town every year. Noting these down gives you something to look forward to, the chance to socialise with new people, and learn a bit more about where you’ll be living.
Browse social media
Get a sense of the area by following local organisations, cafés, guides and creatives. There will be a wealth of useful content out there so you can gauge what’s around, what’s recommended and what the vibe of the place is like. Examples of such pages are Independent Birmingham, Manchester’s Finest, and Out in Leeds – there may be equivalent in your new city or town.
